Hobie Award

In 1999, the Board of Directors of the New York State Ophthalmological Society established an award to recognize the contributions of their esteemed colleague, Hobart “Hobie” A. Lerner, MD, a second generation ophthalmologist who practiced medicine and cared for patients in the Rochester community for more than 50 years. Dr. Lerner has been actively involved in organized ophthalmology on both the state and national levels for more than four decades. He served the Society as its Past President, Nominating Committee Chair, PAC Chair, By-Laws Committee Chair, Board Member and Key Contact Physician. He was honored as recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s inaugural Outstanding Advocate Award.

The Hobie, the Society’s highest honor, is bestowed upon a NYSOS member physician who has made exceptional and extraordinary contributions in the area of humanitarian/community service, political advocacy, or research. Past Hobie Award recipients include:
